Trinity College in Dublin is to offer sexual consent workshops for new students.

The university's student's union is running the classes, which it says are in reaction to the fact that sexual consent is either not understood or not engaged with meaningfully.

It follows a student survey by the university last year which found that 25% of women and 5% of men had experienced a non-consensual sexual experience.

These students at the college think the workshops are a good idea:

Welfare Officer at Trinity SU, Conor Clancy, says the objective is for students to learn about sexual consent in a positive way and to get people talking.

The classes are based on a model piloted by the Oxford University student unions in Britain and those involved have been trained by the likes of the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre.

Conor says the classes are not aimed at any particular group:

The Men's Development Network has consulted with Trinity College and other third level institutions on the topic.

CEO, Alan O'Neill, says it's hugely important to educate young men about issues surrounding sex and consent:

The students union at Trinity says it hopes to start offering sexual consent workshops to new students from September.
