Troops can't get dragged into civil war in Golan

The Taoiseach says the situation with Ireland's peacekeeping mission in Syria is being monitored closely.

The Defence Minister and the Minister for Foreign Affairs are being briefed by the UN today on the latest developments which will then be outlined to Cabinet tomorrow.

Simon Coveney has said Ireland will withdraw from the Golan Heights if the UN does not give him assurances that the risks facing Irish soldiers are being properly managed.

The disputed territory separates Syria from Israel and has been the scene of fighting between the Syrian army and Islamist militants.
