The US president is going to give US$1m of his personal income to help people in Texas and Louisiana hit by Storm Harvey.

The amount matches pledges already made by Hollywood stars Sandra Bullock and Leonardo DiCaprio.

Beyonce and The Kardashians also also backing efforts. 

The storm has killed at least 35 people since hitting Texas on Friday.

Rescuers have begun door-to-door checks of tens of thousands of Houston homes, searching for victims - either dead or alive - left behind in the flood waters.

White House spokeswoman, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, told reporters Donald Trump wants their ideas about which organisations have been most effective at providing aid.

"I'm happy to tell you that he would like to join in the efforts that a lot of the people across this country do - and he's pledging a million dollars of personal money to the fund".
