The US President has promised his country is "not nation building again" as he renews its commitment to Afghanistan.

Donald Trump had been widely expected to announce sending an extra 4,000 troops to the country.

But in a speech in Virginia, he said he wouldn't talk about troop numbers or plans for further military activities.

Instead, he suggested "America's enemy must never know our plans".

The US war in Afghanistan began in 2001, with a peak of around 100,000 US troop deployed in the country in 2010-11.

Currently, around 8,400 US troops are in the country - and President Trump's latest pledge is likely to see that increased by several thousand.

It comes despite Trump's previous opposition to US involvement in the country.

However, yesterday he insisted: "A hasty withdrawal would create a vacuum that terrorists...would instantly fill just as happened before September 11."
