The Teachers Union of Ireland want the implementation of the new Junior Cert cycle to be postponed.

The union says the practical details of the changes have yet to be worked out and time is running out.

The Minister for Education outlined today the exam will be rebranded the Junior Cycle Student Award.

Minister Ruairi Quinn says this new system will put students, rather than exams, at the centre of the three year process.

Gerard Craughwell is President of the TUI he says the changes are being rushed and teachers will not be able to cope with the increased workload.

Speaking today, TUI President Gerard Craughwell said:

‘The implementation of a revised Junior Cycle framework is due to commence in less than nine months, yet the Department of Education and Skills has failed to provide the concrete, practical details which we have repeatedly sought to allow us to objectively consider the proposed changes.’

‘We believe that change that is rash and for which adequate preparation has not been made can cause lasting damage to the education system and particularly to individual students.’
