Two men have died following a car crash near Ballina in Co Mayo.

The  men were travelling alone in separate cars and in opposite directions, when the collision happened at Mount Falcon between Foxford and Ballina at around 5 o'clock this morning.

The road between Ballina and Swinford - the N26 - will be closed for most of the day, to facilitate a forensic examination of the scene.

Gardaí at Ballina are appealing for witnesses.
