A two year old boy who was removed from his Roma family in Athlone yesterday has been reunited with them.

The toddler was placed in HSE care yesterday evening under the terms of the Child Protection Act 1991.

Gardai now say having carried out a full inquiry they are satisfied he is with his biological parents.

The case comes as a 7 year old girl remains in HSE care after being removed from a Roma family in Tallaght in Dublin on Monday.

DNA tests are being carried out to determine her identity after concerns were raised about her pale skin and blond haired appearance.

Her family insist she is their biological daughter and have volunteered DNA samples.  The results of the DNA tests will be known next week.

Concern

The coverage of the cases - and the case of Maria, a young blond girl removed from a Roma family in Greece last week - has raised concerns among the Roma community.

The head of the European Roma Rights Centre Dezideriu Gergey says assumptions are being made about the Roma community based on criminality and on physical appearance:

But Childrens Minister Frances Fitzgerald says people with child protection concerns should come forward.
