Police in England say 1 man has died and several others have been taken to hospital after 35 people were found inside a shipping container at a port at Tilbury Docks in Essex.

The suspected stowaways included adults and children.

Police say some of them are suffering "significant health problems".

The suspected illegal immigrants arrived on a P and O commercial ferry from Zeebrugge in Belgium at around 6am.

The discovery was made when staff became aware of screaming and banging.

7 ambulances attended the scene early this morning, along with members of the hazardous response team and doctors.

Police say those found in the container may be from the Indian sub-continent.
