The UN's Human Rights Council has called on Ireland to allow abortion in cases of fatal foetal abnormality, rape and incest.

The recommendation is among 97 recommendations made by other member states under the Universal Periodic Review of Human Rights.

Recommendations on abortion were submitted by ten countries, with a range of calls asking for amendment to the most recent abortion laws from 2013, or to bring Ireland in line with 'international human rights standards'.

Ireland says it will consider the call and has promised to respond to the UN by September.

It has also accepted 152 other recommendations, including one from the Vatican which wants a housing-led approach to end the problem of long-term homelessness.

But it rejected a call from Haiti to consider a universal basic income for every citizen.
