The UN has launched an urgent aid appeal to help the Philippines recover from the ravages of Typhoon Haiyan.

Launching their appeal UN Humanitarian operations director John Ging said the death toll of is likely to rise considerably in the coming days.

He said "the scale of devastation is massive and it will require the mobilisation of a massive response."

According to Mr Ging the UN humanitarian chief Valerie Amos is already on her way to the devastated islands.

Meanwhile a book of condolence will open in Dublin's Mansion House today for the victims of last week's typhoon in the Phillipines.

Members of the public are invited to sign the book from noon today - from tomorrow the book will be open from 10am to 4pm until Friday.

It's not known how many people were killed by Typhoon Haiyan - but as many as 10,000 are believed to have died around the city of Tacloban alone.

The Red Cross has described the devastation as "absolute bedlam" - as hundreds of thousands of people find themselves homeless and displaced.

Mark Condong is the Phillipine Honorary Consul in Dublin.
