The United Nations Security Council will meet this evening to discuss claims that the Syrian regime has used chemical weapons.
The main opposition group claims that as many as 1,300 people have been killed near the capital, Damascus.
The Assad regime has dismissed the reports, describing them as 'disillusioned and fabricated.'
Earlier, the foreign secretary, William Hague, said Syria must allow UN weapons inspectors to do their job.
