The head of the United Nations says he's "shocked" and appalled at the treatment of refugees trying to enter Europe through Hungary.

Last night water cannons and tear gas was used to keep refugees away from Hungary's border with Serbia, causing huge numbers to move toward Croatia.

Hungary says the EU's migration policy - which cannot include mandatory relocation of refugees, partly because Hungary has vetoed the idea - has failed and now needs urgent reconsideration.

The Hungarian government also says the closure of its border has stopped a humanitarian disaster, because it is funding humanitarian efforts on both sides of the Hungarian-Serbian border.

Croatia has accepted around 6,000 migrants in the last day, after many intending to travel into Hungary veered towards the Croatian border. It has promised an open door policy and has provided buses to bring asylum seekers to reception centres in the capital, Zagreb.

Our political correspondent Gavan Reilly reports.
