Australia's Prime Minister says teams are "very confident" underwater signals picked up in the Indian Ocean are from the black box recorder of the missing Malaysian plane.

Tony Abbott told reporters in China it's helped them to narrow down the search area.

But he's warned of a race against time to find the flight recorders, saying the signal is starting to fade.
