The governor of the central bank's conceded that the number of mortgage customers affected by having their trackers removed could be as high as 15,000.

But the bank says the examination is still ongoing and it can't confirm a final figure.

At least 8,200 mortgages are currently under examination and a further 3,500 have already been restored to trackers.

Governor Philip Lane says as well as seeking redress for customers, they will be taking action against banks.
