As many as 50 people have been found dead in a lorry in eastern Austria.

It appears the victims were migrants being smuggled across the border from Hungary.

Police say initial indications are that they died from suffocation.

The news came as the EU held a summit in Vienna that's discussing the refugee crisis.

Speaking in Vienna, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said she was "shaken" by the tragedy.

And EU Commission Foreign Affairs chief Federica Mogherini is calling on member states to more to prevent such tragedies:
