The head of the Oireachtas Finance Committee says the Banking Inquiry will be up-and-running before the end of the year.

Labour TD Ciarán Lynch is widely expected to head the investigation into the near-collapse of the banking system and the political response to it.

The inquiry had been on hold during the Anglo Trial - but yesterdayÂ’s convictions of former Finance Director Willie McAteer and head of lending in Ireland, Pat Whelan, means preparations are now expected to speed up after Easter.

Finance Committee Chairperson Ciarán Lynch says there's still a lot of work to be done before the start of the inquiry - but it's on track to begin before the end of 2014.
