An American aid worker who had been held hostage in Syria by Islamic State militants has been confirmed dead.

Kayla Mueller was abducted in 2013 while working in Aleppo.

Last week, Islamic State said she had died in a Jordanian air strike, without providing proof.

Announcing news of her death today President Obama said "she represents what is best about America".
