A Miami bartender has been fined €€1,000 after an air rage incident, sparked following a row over an e-cigarette, on board a flight that made an emergency landing at Shannon Airport last night.

Limerick District Court heard the incident cost Norwegian Airlines €€100,000 in re-fuelling and landing slot costs.

The Norwegian Boeing 787 Dreamliner, carrying 249 passengers and 13 crew, was forty minutes into its journey yesterday from London Gatwick to Fort Lauderdale, United States, when the mid air drama began.

Miami bartender, Jody Bochner, was drinking from a litre of gin in a coke bottle before he set off one of the plane's smoke alarms after using an e-cigarette in a toilet.

After a cabin crew member told him he could not use the device he "leapt" from his seat and attempted to assault a member of staff.

Garda Karen Walsh, Shannon Garda Station, said Mr Bochner was very aggressive, shouting, using profanities and banging other passengers seats.

Eventually staff restrained him in handcuffs and the plane was diverted to Shannon Airport.

The diversion forced the Captain to dump 20,000 litres of fuel to to ensure the plane landed within safety limits.

The cost to the airline of dumping and replacing the fuel as well as purchasing new landing slots came to €100,000.

The court fined Mr Bochner €1,000 for been threatening, abusive and insulting on board the plane.

Charges Of been drunk on the flight, and engaging in offensive behaviour having been requested to cease that behaviour were taken into consideration.

Judge Aeneas mccarthy gave Mr Bochner 28 days to pay the fine or spend thirty days in jail in lieu of not paying.
