An American spacecraft is expected to smash into the planet Mercury today after running out of fuel.

The Messenger probe has beamed back images to Earth and gathered a wealth of scientific data since it started orbiting the planet four years ago.

It will plunge into Mercury at almost 9-thousand miles per hour, but the impact will happen on the far side of the planet so we won't be able to see it from Earth.
