The Health Minister has moved to reassure expectant mothers that maternity services in Ireland are safe.

It's after two babies died and five others were deprived of oxygen at a Galway hospital last year.

An independent review of Portiuncula Hospital has been ordered, and the hospital is contacting the families of the seven babies.

Juliette Gash reports:
The Minister for Health also says completion of the new Children's Hospital is set to be delayed by another year.

Mr. Vardkar now says it's not likely to be ready until 2020.

It was announced last year that the hospital would open its doors in spring 2019.

Former minister for health James Reilly had promised that it would be ready by 2018.
