History was made at the Vatican today as two Popes were declared saints at a special ceremony at the Vatican in front of around one million people.

At the climax of the service, Pope Francis said in Latin: "We declare and define Blessed John XXIII and John Paul II to be saints and we enrol them among the saints, decreeing that they are to be venerated as such by the whole Church."

Relics of each man - a container of blood from John Paul and a piece of skin from John - were placed near the altar.

Over 3,000 Irish pilgrims travelled to Rome for the event.  Taoiseach Enda Kenny, who was accompanied by Catholic Primate Cardinal Sean Brady, told reporters afterwards that he issued an invitation to Pope Francis to visit Ireland.

Pope Francis described the two new saints as "priests, bishops and popes of the 20th Century".
