New laws on the rights of victims of crimes will be brought before government ministers today.

The Justice Minister will present a new Victims Rights Bill to her cabinet colleagues.

According to the Irish Independent, the proposed laws will give people a legal right to know why a suspect isn't being prosecuted, and also when criminals are due for release from prison.

Ireland's facing a deadline to bring in the new laws because of an EU directive in the area.
