Compensation payouts for victims of whiplash in Ireland are around five times bigger than in the UK.
A report by the Personal Injuries Assessment Board showed the average award was €20,037
This compares to €3,798 in the UK.
The data was based on an analysis of 4,500 awards.
The high level of compensation payments has been cited as one of the main reasons for the increase in insurance costs.
