Whistleblowers legislation comes into force

There's been a broad welcome for new legislation to protect whistleblowers.

The Protected Disclosures act offers a 'safety net' to all types in all sectors - who wish to blow the whistle on suspected wrongdoing at their place of work.

The legislation offers coverage to all employees, contractors, agency workers, gardaí and Defence Forces personnel who want to make disclosures about their employer.

Under the new law - whistleblowers who are unfairly dismissed will get five years' pay as compensation.

The new laws outline a broad range of 'relevant wrongdoings' including criminal offences, threats to health and safety or the environment and improper use of public funds.

Shusheela Math is Legal Counsellor with Transparency International Ireland - who helped prepare the legislation.
