French President Francois Hollande has called an emergency meeting of his defence council this morning, after claims US intelligence agents bugged him and two of his predecessors.

The whistleblowing site Wikileaks published documents suggesting the US National Security Agency targeted Hollande, Nicolas Sarkozy and Jacques Chirac.

Details from the documents are published in French newspaper Liberation (pron Libber-assy-on) and indicate the spying took place from 2006 to 2012.

One document suggests President Hollande approved secret meetings about the possible fallout if Greece left the eurozone as far bask as 2012.

The same file alleges that the French leader secretly met with members of the main German opposition party - the SDP.

Another document, dated 2008, was titled "Sarkozy sees himself as only one who can resolve world financial crisis".

The US state department refused to comment on the leaks.
