Wind Warnings Issued Ahead of Storm Franklin

Status orange wind warnings have been issued for several western counties ahead of the arrival of Storm Franklin.

Franklin is the third named storm to impact Ireland in the past week, following Dudley and Eunice in recent days.

A status orange wind warning for Clare will come into effect for 12 hours from midday today.

Meanwhile, a status orange warning for Donegal, Leitrim and Sligo will be in effect from 11pm tonight until 7am tomorrow morning.

Galway and Mayo are also under an orange wind warning for 12 hours from 3pm.

Strong gale force winds with severe and damaging gusts are expected in all those counties, with a warning of potential coastal flooding.

A lower-level status yellow wind warning is in place for the whole of Ireland until 9am tomorrow.

A separate rain warning is in effect for Cavan, Donegal, Leitrim, Mayo and Sligo until 6pm this evening.

Alan O'Reilly from Carlow Weather says the winds are going to be very disruptive.

He explained: "The rain will clear to showers later today.

"But those winds really will be quite strong throughout the country, with gusts of up to 100-110 km/h per possible.

"It really is going to be a very unpleasant day with those very strong winds throughout the country, and they will persist throughout the day and into tonight."
