A woman has told a court she couldn'’t bring herself to use the word “rape” for months after her husband forced her to have sex with him.

She said she felt “completely powerless” and is still angry with herself for not seeing it coming.

On August 7th 2014, the man called to the home of his estranged wifeÂ’'s parents.

He said he'Â’d a present for their son.

The court heard he pulled a hammer from a bag and attacked both her and her mother before neighbours came to their rescue.

While giving a statement to Gardai, his wife revealed heÂ’d raped her at their home in Dublin a few months beforehand.

She said he refused to accept their marriage was over.

The 42-year-old admitted carrying out the hammer attack and was found guilty of raping, threatening to kill and threatening to harm his wife following a three-week trial last month.

In court today, his wife outlined the impact his crimes have had on her, their son and her family.

She described it as a “never-ending nightmare”.

His barrister asked the judge to consider suspending a portion of his sentence.

As well as a loss of liberty, he said his client has also lost his reputation and has brought humiliation upon himself with his family.

HeÂ’'s due to be sentenced next week.
