A woman rescued from the Mediterranean has given birth to a baby girl on board Irish naval vessel the LÉ Niamh.

The baby who's been named "Destiny" was delivered by Irish medics medics Paul O'Connell and Conor Kilbride this afternoon.

The mother was among 114 people rescued yesterday by the Médecins Sans Frontiéres vessel the MV Dignity, and transferred to the Irish naval vessel.

Mother and baby were transferred to an Italian Coast Guard vessel and are doing well.

They're now on their way to the Port of Trapani in Sicily, to receive post natal care.

The LÉ Niamh is now transporting 369 ”‹”‹people to Palermo where it is expected to arrive alongside at 7 am.
