The wording of a referendum on marriage rights for same-sex couples has been released.

The new words to be put into the Constitution were agreed by the cabinet this morning, and published by the justice minister this afternoon.

The proposal to be put to the people will be on whether a new section 41.4 should be put into the constitution, after the part relating to divorce.

The words are as follows:

"Marriage may be contracted in accordance with law by two persons without distinction as to their sex."

Voters will be asked to vote Yes or No on whether those words should be added.

A Referendum Commission to govern the conduct of the referendum will be established next week after the formal bill providing for the referendum has been published.

The text has also been published on the other referendum being held in May, on the age at which citizens can run for President.

Voters will be asked to vote Yes if they want to lower the minimum age of eligibility from 35 to 21.
