A judge in Cork has recommended that teenagers should be breathalysed before being allowed admission to underage discos.
How effective would this be in tackling the issue of binge-drinking among young people in Ireland?
Psychotherapist and author Stella O'Malley thinks it's a little heavy-handed, but recognises that there are huge issues surrounding teenage binge-drinking.
"I do think we need a more temperate attitude to drink. If you look towards Europe, the teenagers there seem to be normal drinkers."
Stella believes effective ad campaigns could help make teenagers think twice before overdoing it on a night out: "There's nothing sadder or nastier looking than a teenager who's plastered, and I think hard-hitting video footage will make them realise."
Eunan McKinney, Head of Communications and Advocacy with Alcohol Action Ireland, is in favour of the judge's recommendations.
"There is undoubtedly a crisis in relation to alcohol consumption amongst our children, and I think the judge is simply reflecting that and should be commended."
"The availability of alcohol now is so ubiquitous that these children don't stand a chance. We have a tsunami of an alcohol culture, and thankfully the Public Health Alcohol Act is going to start to make some significant changes to that culture."
