Sexual assaults appear to be on the rise in third level institutions, particularly for those starting college for the first time.
Mary Crilly from Cork's Sexual Violence Centre says she has been made aware of three cases of rape of first year students in recent weeks, which were not reported.
Mary says that students are often afraid to tell their parents what has happened to them, as they are afraid they have let them down.
She also thinks it's an issue that won't be solved by consent classes alone.
"One in five girls in this country will be raped, and the men who are doing it do not want consent. They want power and they want control."
Elaine Byrnes, Doctoral Researcher in Psychology at NUI Galway, says there needs to be "equality in the communication of consent."
"Anything less than that demonises men and infantilises women, and for me consent is more important than reducing it to a gender conflict."
"It transcends gender, sexual orientation and sexual identity."
