Occupants of an empty house on Dublin's North Frederick Street were evicted last night and six people arrested.
The activist group Take Back The City have since released a statement condemning the actions of the Gardaí, who were pictured wearing balaclavas, and a private security firm in carrying out the eviction.
Eoin O'Faogain, spokesperson for Take Back The City, joined us to explain the situation: "The house had been empty for more than three years in the midst of an unprecedented housing crisis in this country."
"The occupation happened as a way of highlighting the incredible nature of this land hoarding that's going on by people with vast amounts of wealth and vacant properties, at a time when there are 10,000 people without permanent homes and 4,000 homeless children."
Sinn Féin justice spokesperson Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire said: "The occupation of houses is a form of protest that has a long history in Ireland, and I think it is a legitimate way of highlighting land hoarding."
"But I think the key issue here is a very heavy-handed and quite disturbing response from the Garda Public Order Unit."
