Carl Frampton's opponent confirmed for US return

Carl Frampton has confirmed his opponent for his return to the boxing ring in Philadelphia next month.

The Belfast fighter will face Mexico's Emmanuel Dominguez in the city of brotherly love on August 10th. The bout will be contested over 10-rounds, with Dominguez a veteran of 36 fights, winning 26 of those.

Frampton - now 32 - hasn't fought since losing to IBF featherweight title-holder Josh Warrington by unanimous decision in Manchester in December.

Victory over Dominguez would set up a world title fight with WBO champion Oscar Valdez later in 2019. It's a huge opportunity for the former two-weight world champion, whose defeat to Warrington left him questioning his future.

Frampton says that carrot of a meeting with Valdez is spurring him on to put in a rousing performance at the Liacouras Center next month, “Dominguez is a tall, young, hungry featherweight, so I’ll need to be on my game.

“The premise of an Oscar Valdez fight is dangling in front of me, so I want to go out and show the world that I’ve still got what it takes to be a world champion.

“Winning is always the most important thing, but I want to do it in style. It’s great to be boxing Stateside again. And Philly, in particular, has so much boxing history.

The Frampton fight will only be Dominguez's fifth ever fight outside of his native Mexico, with his last excursion seeing him lose to Jordan Gill in Peterborough in March of this year. But the 25-year old's most recent fight saw him register the eighth knockout of his career with a stoppage of fellow countryman Jose Roberto Gonzalez.
