Chris Barrett the latest Mayo stalwart to bow out

Chris Barrett has become the fifth Mayo player in recent weeks to retire from inter-county football.

The Belmullet defender started last month’s All Ireland final defeat to Dublin.

Barrett won seven Connacht titles and an Allianz National League in his twelve years on the panel.

Hours before his announcement, the corner-back had just been nominated for an All-Star. He already has one All-Star to his name for his performances in 2017.

Barrett also represented his country, as part of the Ireland squad that lost the 2017 International Rules series to Australia.

The 33-year old joins David Clarke, Tom Parsons, Donal Vaughan and Seamie O'Shea in departing James Horan's panel.

In a parting statement, Barrett said, "I feel incredibly privileged to have played alongside some of the most talented and honourable men to ever pull on a Mayo jersey.

"Not to mention the management teams, the support staff and our loyal supporters that have been central to everything good Mayo GAA has achieved over the last number of years.

"Thank you to each and every one of you for a memorable journey."

Mayo GAA chairman Liam Moffatt added, "I would like to thank Chris fa his outstanding contribution and commitment to Mayo GAA.

"From his excellent debut season as a minor in 2005 to the All Ireland senior final 2020, Chris consistently delivered top drawer defensive performances.

"Like many of our players Chris never let injures or career related travels dampen his commitment and for that we in Mayo GAA are very grateful. "I would like to wish Chris and his family all the very best for the future."
