For the first time in over 18 months, full capacity crowds are set to return to sporting events in Ireland.

The Government announced on Tuesday afternoon that Covid-19 restrictions on outdoor events are to be lifted from Friday 22nd October.

This means just over 50,000 people can attend the Republic of Ireland's World Cup Qualifier against Portugal next month.

It would be the first time manager Stephen Kenny would experience a full crowd at Lansdowne Road, since taking over as Irish boss last year.

Last week 25,000 attended their 4-0 friendly win over Qatar.

The upcoming FAI Cup semi-finals at Richmond Park and Dalymount Park, which take place on Friday 22nd October, will be able to double their capacities as crowds had previously been capped at 50%.

The United Rugby Championship game between Connacht and Ulster is also set for the Aviva Stadium on Saturday 23rd October.

The same venue will also host all three of Ireland's November Internationals against New Zealand, Japan and Argentina.

According to the Government's website, an EU Digital COVID Certificate (COVID-19 pass) (vaccine or recovery certificate) will be required to attend indoor sporting events.

The latest measures state,

"for indoor live music, drama, live entertainment and sporting events audience/spectators should be fully seated (standing permitted at your seat)."

In terms of outdoor events, patrons will not have to show any covid related documentation upon entry.

"COVID-19 passes and fixed capacity limits will not apply for outdoor events. However, sectors should ensure appropriate protective measures are in place."
