The FAI has announced that the late Jimmy Magee will be named as the Special Merit Award recipient at this year's '3' FAI International Awards on Sunday, March 18.

The ceremony, which is to be broadcast live on RTE2, will include a unique tribute to the late Irish sports broadcasting legend who the FAI say, "elevated Irish football to a new level through his passionate and skilled style of commentating."

Magee, who had been ill for some time, passed away last September aged 82.

The Louth native started out at RTÉ back in 1956 and as well many other major sporting events, covered 11 World Cups.

The full list of nominees for this year's 3 FAI International Awards will be revealed on Friday, March 9.
