I set the alarm for the early hours of Sunday morning to watch Floyd Mayweather Jr. make it 47-0 in the pro ranks. There’s no doubting he’s one of the greatest boxers of all time but his rematch with Marcos Maidana was one that could have easily sent me back to sleep.

I’ve always had an interest in combat sports and with that comes late night viewing but I’ve changed my approach recently because I’m getting too old to pull an all nighter plus I usually have to work on a Sunday morning.

Gone are the days of rounding up the lads to go out on the town before we all pack into my sitting room to watch the latest title fight from Las Vegas. You take a risk staying up to watch these fights but when you get a classic or a big upset it’s well worth it.

I saw Oliver McCall have a meltdown in the ring against Lennox Lewis but one of the first big Heavyweight bouts I watched was between MikeTyson and Evander Holyfield who wasn’t given much of chance that night:

More recently I remember Floyd Mayweather against Ricky Hatton and the house was packed to the rafters for that one:

There has been some great fights and then there are the ones you feel cheated for staying up to watch but it all comes with the territory and I’ll do it all over again when Conor McGregor fights in Vegas on the 27th of September which will technically be the 28th over here.

Can you remember the best fights you’ve stayed up to watch?
