All golf courses to close under level-5 COVID-19 restrictions

It's been confirmed that Level-5 coronavirus restrictions will force the closure of golf courses around the country.

The Golfing Union of Ireland (GUI) and Irish Ladies Golf jointly confirmed the news on Wednesday evening.

It's not yet known if driving ranges and practice facilities can remain open.

Elite sport was exempt from the restrictions announced by the Taoiseach Micheal Martin on Monday night.

However, all rungs beneath the top one on the sporting ladder have been hit by the effects of Level-5.

Earlier on Wednesday it was confirmed that all Under-20 and Minor GAA inter-county matches would be paused as off 00:01 on Thursday morning.

Some had argued that with minimal to zero points of contact and the ability to play solo, golf would be an ideal sport to continue under the new guidelines.

However, discussions with Sport Ireland over the past 48-hours have only brought bad news for those looking to hit their local course over the next six weeks.

A statement from the GUI read:

Following intensive engagement over the past 48 hours, we have been informed this afternoon by Sport Ireland that, very regrettably golf clubs must close under the new level 5 restrictions.

Essential course maintenance is permitted to continue under level 5. We have sought clarity on the issue as to whether ranges/practice facilities can remain open for exempted activities. We will update clubs on this as soon as possible.
