Granada confirm surprise appointment of Tony Adams as manager

Call off the search! The most left-field sports story of the week has now been confirmed.

Arsenal and England legend Tony Adams is back in the managerial game, and he's taking over at Spanish side Granada. Yeah, we weren't expecting it either.

After the La Liga strugglers sacked manager Lucas Alcaraz this morning, Adams was announced as his successor until the end of the season, in an appointment that left many scratching their heads.

Despite a stellar playing career, Adams hasn't done much of note in the dugout. He lasted a year in charge of Wycombe from November 2003 to 2004, overseeing their relegation to League 2.

In October 2008 he took caretaker charge of Portsmouth after Harry Redknapp's departure to Spurs, and after a good start, was given the job permanently. However, the honeymoon was brief, lasting until the following February before being sacked.

There was also a spell in charge of Azerbaijani side Gabala FC from 2001 to 2012, which was his last role as a manager. He'll now aim to keep Granada in the top tier in Spain, but the task is a tough one. They're without a win in 6 games, second from bottom in the table, seven points off safety and just seven games left to play.

Adams isn't coming into the job blind though. He's actually been working as an adviser at the club for several months following a takeover by Chinese investors.

If his dress sense is anything to go by, Granada could be an interesting team to watch for the rest of the season!
