Healy and McPhillips star on another positive day at European Indoors


Andrew Coscoran and Paul Robinson both managed top-10 finishes in the men's 1500m final at the European Indoor Athletics Championships. 

Jakob Ingebritsen looked to have won the race, having placed his cards on the table early, dictating the pace for the duration.

However, the Norwegian was later disqualified with gold instead going to defending champion Marcin Lewandowski. Spain's Jesus Gomez took silver, with Ignacio Fontes upgraded a bronze.

A late rally saw Coscoran come home in seventh, later upgraded to sixth. in 3:40.38, with Robinson a revised ninth in a time of 3:40.74.

Earlier, Phil Healy booked her place in Saturday's 400m final.

The Bandon sprinter followed a win in her heat, with victory from lane-6 of her semi-final.

Mark English and Cian McPhillips both progressed to the final of the men's 800m semi-finals.

National record-holder English placed third in his heat, in a time of 1:49.79. Speaking after his heat, the Donegal athlete said his main aim of the year was accruing Olympic qualification points.

But arguably the better performance belonged to Longford teenager Cian McPhillips. He went from seventh heading into the final lap to come home a comfortable second behind Mariano Garcia of Spain in a time of 1:49.98.

John Fitzsimons put in a brave display in his heat, threatening as they hit the bell to claim one of those crucial top-three places. But after 18-months out, the Kildare man tightened up down the home straight and placed fifth in a blanket finish to miss out on the semis.

Nadia Power will return for the women's 800m semi-finals on Saturday evening. She'll be in the third of three semi-finals, going to the line at 6.16pm, Irish time.

Healy will go at 7.25pm Irish time in the 400m final.
