Hearn says "plonker" Jake Paul will help make Taylor-Serrano superfight

Eddie Hearn has praised the role of Jake Paul as the long-awaited matchup of Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano draws a step closer.

The pair are due to headline the 20,000-seat Madison Square Garden main arena in April, with Hearn revealing that contracts are close to being signed.

The fight has been a long time coming, having been originally scheduled for Manchester in May of 2020 before a global pandemic put paid to those plans.

Serrano's business is now handled by Most Valuable Promotions, a company co-founded and run by Youtuber-turned-boxer, Jake Paul.

"I love it," Hearn told Intu Boxing of his discussions with Paul, "Because Jake Paul - although he is a plonker sometimes - has a massive, massive following.

"He's very bright. He's done a great job with Serrano. He will make this fight huge, huge with us.

"He's very, very driven to get respect in the boxing world for doing something like this. So his involvement with this fight is more than welcome, and he's a great partner in this fight."

Hearn says contracts for the superfight could be signed as soon as next week, and that a global media tour will follow - including a stop in Dublin.

The bout is due to be held at MSG on April 30, the same night as Shakhur Stevenson faces Oscar Valdez in Las Vegas.

But neither the size of the venue, nor the potential clash with another major fight concern the Matchroom supremo.

"We spoke to Madison Square Garden - they wouldn't even let us put it in the small arena," Hearn said. The Manhattan venue hosts the smaller, 7,000-seat Hulu Theatre.

"This is such an iconic fight, you wouldn't be doing it justice to go into the theatre.

"You've got to go to town with this fight. Two of the greatest female fighters of all-time, the biggest female fight of all time, myself, Matchroom, DAZN, Jake Paul pushing this fight - this is a massive moment, not just for women's boxing, but for boxing in general."

On the clash with Stevenson-Valdez, Hearn told Intu, "That's our date - we're not moving.

"This fight, for me, is bigger than Valdez against Stevenson because... and that's a great fight... because it's iconic.

He added, "This is the moment for women's boxing that changes everything."
