“It’s great, I’m thrilled!”

Speaking of his success to Ray, Heffernan admitted, “ I’d still love an Olympic medal. I probably won’t know the magnitude of this until I get home”.  It was an emotional experience for Rob and he wasn’t afraid to admit that he shed a tear or two.

Talking about the last bit of the race he said: “I was just concentrating on the here and now, focused on every kilometre, just work work work, I wasn’t thinking you’re world champion… It was only when I got into the stadium that I actually realised it”.

“I kept on trying to be positive because if you let any negative thought in at all your body will react in a negative way...I prepared for being in a medal position, and I prepared mentally for it as well, and everything came off so I’m thrilled".

He said finishing fourth in London 2012 was the best result he could have got on the day:  “I did everything I could in London”.

Thanking his wife Marion, Rob told Ray:  “She put her athletic career to aside to help me this year… I couldn’t have done it without her. It’s brilliant for the both of us”.

Rob’s kids will be proud – his daughter already told him he was ripped!

The presentation of the medals takes place tomorrow evening.
