IABA defer AGM to allow banished provincial bodies to appeal

The IABA has decided to defer its AGM.

Originally scheduled for Sunday November 28, it's been put back to allow three provincial bodies to appeal their expulsion from Irish amateur boxing's governing body.

The civil war in Irish boxing reached boiling point last week, when an independent membership panel voted to uphold an IABA Central Council decision to revoke the memberships of the Leinster Provincial Council, Connacht Provincial Council and the Dublin County Board.

They'd withdrawn their support for the Central Council over several issues.

Among them were alleged breaches of COVID-19 regulations, breaches of confidentiality and the IABA's failure to elect two new directors - a measure passed at the 2019 AGM.

The IABA's chairman of its board of directors Ciaran Kirwan appeared in front of an Oireachtas Sub-Committee earlier this month - alongside Sport Ireland chief John Treacy - where the governance issues dogging the association were discussed.

"Other sports, when they have dirty linen, they do it in the background,” Treacy said.

“Others do it in the public eye, and unfortunately that’s where boxing is at the moment."

He added, "It’s our strong view that it’s time for Irish boxing to adopt modern governance practices. In this regard, we have initiated this governance review at the request of the IABA.

“It’s well known that not everybody within the Irish boxing community is fully supportive of the IABA and the High Performance Unit.

"Now it’s really time for that conflict to stop."

IABA statement:

The IABA AGM, scheduled to take place on November 28th in Belfast, has been deferred.

This deferral is to allow candidates in the elections to Central Council affected by the recent determination of Independent Membership Panel to exercise their right to an external appeal of that decision, using the mechanisms of Sports Dispute Service Ireland (SDSI).

A rescheduled date for the AGM will be issued at the earliest opportunity.

The AGM scheduled for November 28th was to have been a dual in-person and online meeting. Given the changing Covid 19 situation, it is likely that the event will take place online, only. An advisory will issue when the date for the AGM is re-set.
