Inter-county refs "broadly in favour" of introducing VAR in GAA - Gavin

Former All-Ireland Hurling final referee Brian Gavin says he's in favour of the introduction of VAR in Gaelic games and that the majority of inter-county officials would welcome it.

Limerick is set to bring a motion on the issue to Congress and Gavin says introducing the technology is a "must".

He also feels refs are broadly in favour of VAR being used to help improve decisions on the pitch.

"There's been a few incidents in the last number of years, one, in particular, was the "ghost goal" between Waterford and Tipperary in Limerick.  For the sake of 20 or 30 seconds, VAR can be looked at and the right decision can be got. It's just echoed down to the referee with the communication system like with hawk-eye,  a very simple solution.

"I think soccer has maybe overdone it but I think on big decisions it's a must for referees going forward. I've spoken to a number of referees in the last couple of months and the majority would favour it.

"It'll take the pressure off them because there's nothing as bad as going back to watch The Sunday Game, and (wrong decisions) are being talked about on social media and you're left there feeling isolated and alone. I think if VAR can be introduced to help our referees then it has to be positive for our games."
