James Milner "still improving" as he signs extension at Liverpool

Liverpool's utility man James Milner has followed the lead of his manager Jurgen Klopp by signing a new deal at Anfield.

The 33-year old has signed a contract extension keeping him with the Premier League leaders until the summer of 2022.

Milner's deal follows close on the heels of Klopp's 2-year extension that will see the manager stay until 2024.

Milner will be 36 when his deal eventually expires, but Klopp feels the former England international is in suspended animation, "One of my favourite things about Millie, of which there are many, is he is genuinely still improving all the time as a player.

"He has an outstanding attitude: towards football, towards looking after himself and towards looking after others. He is an outstanding footballer and we all believe he still has a lot left to give, which is why this deal makes so much sense for all.

"He is an exceptional player, professional and person."

Klopp highlighted the influence of his vice-captain at the club, particularly on the day of their remarkable Champions League comeback against Barcelona, "As soon as he walked through the door that day, he was pushing everyone around him and motivating them and I loved it."

Milner has made 198 appearances for the club so far, and helped them win the Champions League in June.

The former Newcastle and Manchester City man is hoping to be part of a Liverpool squad that lands a first title in 30-years come May.

"There’s a long, long way to go now, we know that", Milner told the club's site, "No-one is getting ahead of themselves. Again, that’s a massive strength of the squad, we take it a game at a time and concentrate on one at a time.

"But you can see the drive in the squad to keep pushing and to try to play at the intensity that we play at every couple of days, which we are at the moment.

"That’s testament to everyone in and around the club, all the work everybody does at Melwood and the mental attitude and strength that we have to keep going and pushing again."
