Joey Carbery: "The buzz around the camp this week has been insane"

Ireland's exciting young back Joey Carbery has revealed he was nervous he would miss the World Cup after injuring his ankle in a warm up game against Italy.

The Munster playmaker has returned to training this week as Ireland build up to Sunday's opening match against Scotland in Yokohama.

He thanked the medical team for smoothing his path to the greatest show on earth:

"Within myself, I was thinking, will I be ready, will I be ok to go? But then, I had great hope from the physios and the doctors, they got me through it all. There were a lot of long days, but I suppose it's worth it all in the end."

Carbery is aware that with his experience at full back, he is able to slot in as a utility option if Rob Kearney isn't fit to start against the Scots.

"Yeah I don't mind, I suppose it adds another string to my bow. Wherever the management need me, I suppose I will be happy to fit in."

Joey Carbery also gave an insight into how Ireland are going in training.

"I think having the four test matches in the pre-season was pretty crucial to us. There's a lot of learnings we took from it. It's not every year that the first four games of the season are going to be test matches. I think that kind of set us up quite well. The buzz around the camp this week has been insane, lads are bouncing off each other. I suppose if we can tap into that energy and tap into what we learned over the pre-season, we had a really tough pre-season with the running and everything, hopefully that will all stand to us."
