Juan Mata has signed new contract with Manchester United.

The deal will extend the Spaniard’s time with the Red Devils until June 2021. There is also an option within the new deal to extend it until 2022.

He joined in January 2014 from Chelsea for around €46 million, after falling out with then-Blues manager José Mourinho.

He’s made 218 appearances for Manchester United in that time in all competitions, scoring 45 times.

Under Louis Van Gaal he won a FA Cup at Old Trafford before adding a Community Shield, League Cup and Europa League medal in Mourinho’s first season with the Reds.

The 31-year old had also won the FA Cup, Champions League and a Europa League medal during his time at Stamford Bridge. The midfielder was out of contract at the end of this month and had been linked with a return to Spain.

Mata had been part of the victorious Spanish national team that conquered the World and Europe in 2010 and 2012 respectively. He scored in the final of Euro 2012 in Kiev, as Spain defeated Italy 4-0.

The midfielder came on off the bench in the 87th minute, and finished the scoring within a minute of walking onto the pitch.

On signing the new contract, Juan Mata has said, “It is a real honour to continue to represent this [Manchester United] amazing club and our incredible fans. I have been at Manchester United for five year and I am proud to call Manchester United my home.”

Meanwhile, manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer who signed a permanent deal with the Red Devils in March has called the 31-year old “the ultimate professional”.

The Norwegian continued to say that the team now have “some fantastic your players and Juan’s vast experience will help them to reach their potential over the coming seasons.

“I am delighted that he has signed a new contract, as I know that his talent and mentality will be invaluable to the squad”.
