Ian Madigan is well known for his versatility. The Leinster kicker has often been called on to cover in the centre but Joe Schmidt has move his attention to scrum half. The Irish coach has confirmed that Madigan will act as back up to Conor Murray and Eoin Reddan at the World Cup. It is part of a plan to maximise coverage from the 31 players in the squad.

Joe says it is part of a plan that has been in the working for some time.

Madigan's attention being switched to scrum half was good news for Darren Cave.  The Ulsterman felt he was being left out in the cold a couple of years ago, but Joe says he now fills a pivotal role.

Tadhg Furlong's inclusion in the 31 man squad raised a few eyebrows. The Leinster prop earned his first cap as a substitute in the recent defeat to Wales. Joe says his inclusion is also down to versatility.

Joe admits that is was hard to tell the players that had missed the cut but says some of them can still play a role, and is encourage by their reaction.
