Middlesbrough sack Woodgate and appoint Warnock

Neil Warnock has been appointed the new manager of Middlesbrough following their sacking of Jonathan Woodgate this morning.

'Boro made the decision to end Woodgate's tenure with the club sitting just above the Championship's relegation zone on points difference with eight games to play.

Woodgate had been given the "full support" of chairman Steve Gibson before football's shutdown in March, with Gibson insisting that his manager was not the problem at the club.

But the former England duty was relieved of his duties this morning following their weekend loss to Swansea and though not mentioned by the club, it's also expected that Robbie Keane will depart his coaching role at the club.

For Warnock, it represents a return to management just seven months after he departed his role with Cardiff City.

“Middlesbrough Football Club can confirm that head coach Jonathan Woodgate has been relieved of his duties with immediate effect," the Teeside club announced in a statement.

“Jonathan was relieved of his role on Tuesday morning and will be replaced by the experienced Neil Warnock.

“Warnock will assume responsibility immediately. The club would like to place on record its thanks to Jonathan for all his work in the role of head coach.”
