Mike Quirke set to be confirmed as new Laois football manager

Former Kerry footballer Mike Quirke is set to be confirmed as the new Laois senior football manager.

The four-time All Ireland winner with the Kingdom is the preferred candidate of the county's selection committee. However, Off The Ball understands that the Laois County Board are still awaiting a meeting with the selection committee.

Should he be ratified next Monday, Quirke will take the reins from another Kerryman - John Sugrue.

Quirke has been Kerins O'Rahily's manager in his native Kerry in recent years, leading them to back-to-back Kerry SFC finals in 2017 and 2018.

Sugrue stepped down in July following their 4-20 to 1-15 loss to Cork in round 4 of the All Ireland football qualifiers. Speaking after that defeat, Sugrue bemoaned their lack of progress in the Championship.

Quirke will take over a Laois side who have been promoted from Division 4 to Division 2 of the Allianz Football League inside two years.

His appointment would follow a trend of Kerrymen making their first steps in inter-county management after Paul Galvin was handed a two-year term with Wexford.
